The recent work of Faria van Creij Callender, living in Amsterdam, invites you into her dream world of reverie, nostalgia, and love. She weaves her Surinamese/Dutch heritage with inspiration from my immediate surroundings, blending layers of past, present, and future versions of herself.
Accompanied by rich symbolism such as the tulip, a motorcycle and a horse, her paintings speak to her sense of a dual identity. With each portrait bearing traces of her own, Faria points to a shared experience of recognizing herself in other people. Almost like a mirror, her work reflects the shared humanity within our differences.
All frames were made with her father Faisal Callender, making this series a multigenerational series.
Faria Van Creij Callender graduated from The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, in 2023, and won the prestigious Royal Price of Modern Painting in 2024. Since then, her career has grown significantly. Based in her Amsterdam studio—the city where she was born and raised in, she has exhibited in multiple solo and group shows.
