Phillipa Atkinson (b. 1994, Australia) is a plein air painter based in Amsterdam, NL. Her practice is tethered to elements of sun, rain, and wind—truths of the present moment. She offers a practiced hand in surrender to larger, fickle forces. This simple act serves to reconcile her sprawling roots: to belong in the now is to be home, always.
Having grown up between Australia, The United States, and The Netherlands, impermanence has coloured Atkinson’s relationship to physical mark-making. Often relating more closely to contexts of time rather than place, a shift to embodied painting has caused a marked evolution in Atkinson’s work. Cultivated, in part, during her time as a furniture maker at Dutch studio, Kooij: heavy, fast-paced work with colour served to strengthen her intuitive channels.
Atkinson holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Her return to painting has been shepherded by Amsterdam-based galleries A Flag & The Frozen Fountain. Globally, her work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Tate Modern and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Her work sits in private collections spanning The United States, Europe, and Australia.
