TAKESHI IKEDA

Japan | B.1979

After graduating from Shibaura Institute of Technology, Faculty of Engineering in 2002, he began his artistic practice based in Tokyo. His creative process starts with reconfiguring the essence of materials, drawing from their inherent visual information and the sensibilities derived from history. Using diverse materials such as cigar ribbons, tobacco boxes, silk and satin ribbons, washi paper, and Nishijin-ori obi and kimono, he has produced and exhibited both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works as well as installations.

He was raised in a culturally diverse environment, which has profoundly shaped his perspective as an artist. His grandmother ran a small tobacco shop, embedding in his earliest memories the culture of living alongside tobacco. His grandfather was a company founder who embodied an entrepreneurial spirit deeply rooted in the local community. His uncle and aunt were pioneers in the Japanese patchwork quilting scene and taught him that “stories can be constructed through fabric,” a sensibility that continues to live on in his collage-based practice today. His father was a photographer and a disciple of Ihei Kimura, one of Japan’s most renowned photographers. For him, photography was an early form of “training the gaze,” and the aesthetic discipline inherited from his father pulses through the composition and structural sensibility of his work. His extended family also includes figures such as corporate executives, a university president, a manga artist, and several entrepreneurs. Each, in their own way, has influenced his thinking at the intersection of society and creativity.

With such a background, his work transcends mere visual expression, becoming a layered exploration of culture, memory, and institutional structure. His practice is rooted in an ongoing inquiry into the relationships between material and history, the individual and the system, art and society.
