JPS Gallery is profoundly honoured to announce “The Architecture of Joy,” marking both the institutional debut and the first international solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist Cynthia Mak, hosted at the prestigious Paradise Art Space. Anchored by the poetic premise "Where Joy Dwells, Dreams Take Shape," the exhibition orchestrates interconnected bodies of work to explore how human emotion inhabits spatial dimensions, both physical and imagined. Through vibrant geometric shapes, viewers are invited to become the architects of their own inner worlds, charting a course through a meticulously crafted imaginary metropolis.

Cultivated by her lifelong immersion in Hong Kong's bustling urban cityscape, Cynthia adopts a whimsical, lighthearted lens to examine the shifting realities of modern existence. By mining the structural complexities of cityscapes and the simple delights of childhood play, she reveals how our perception of the environment evolves over time and with experience. Translating this dynamic vision into a physical journey, the exhibition unfolds as an ascending spatial continuum, seamlessly guiding the observer from the intimate, interpersonal realm to the sweeping, grand panorama of an entire city.

Part II — The Façade

As the vantage point expands, “The Façade” reimagines architecture as an emotional vessel. Every façade acts as both a mask and a promise—a vision of the life that might unfold inside, and a surface shaped by experience that bears the profound imprint of the lives, memories, and dreams dwelling within. This chapter is anchored by masterful collaborative carpets with Tai Ping, the globally revered Hong Kong atelier celebrated for its bespoke craftsmanship and exquisite textiles. Woven artisanal textures bearing Cynthia’s designs cascade from wall to floor, forging a grand, tactile threshold whose rich dimensionality engages in a striking dialogue with the planar flatness of Cynthia’s paintings.

Drawing from impressions gathered across her global travels, Cynthia weaves cultural memory and human aspiration into these structural forms. Employing a strict two-point perspective to draw the eye toward a central door, these symmetrical compositions gracefully guide the viewer’s gaze outward as the façade unfolds into varying structures and ultimately reveals a serene garden.

Part III — Landscape

The perspective then broadens significantly into “Landscape”, the juncture where interior emotion intersects with the boundless external world. Drawing inspiration from the 12th-century Chinese masterpiece “Along the River During the Qingming Festival”, Cynthia reimagines this iconic handscroll in her signature geometric abstraction. The sprawling landscape is divided into two realms: a modern Chinese cityscape blending high-rises with traditional rooftops, juxtaposed against an organic expanse of mountains and waterways. A vibrant rainbow bridge links the two, standing as a symbolic testament to the delicate balance required between human habitation and the natural world.

Part IV — The Building Block Estate

Moving into the three-dimensional realm, “The Building Block Estate” introduces a sculptural neighbourhood that harmonises the joy of children’s building blocks with the timeless grace of Asian architecture. Cynthia reimagines classic structural silhouettes by distilling ornate traditional motifs into minimalist forms. Brought to life in her signature vibrant colour palette, these stacked geometric volumes cultivate a community where intention and imagination seamlessly converge. 

Each property rises through rhythmic layers of colour and shape, transcending mere physical construction to embody a distinct character. The “House of Harmony” radiates balance and vitality, while the “House of Wisdom” reflects deep insight and the enduring journey of learning. Reaching upward, the “Tower of Joy” celebrates playfulness and delight, standing alongside the “Tower of Prosperity”, which ascends with resilience and abundance. Grounding the collection, the “House of Strength” anchors the estate as a steadfast guardian of courage and protection. Together, these five works shape a meaningful haven—a space where every stacked tier is a blessing, and each structure stands as a tranquil sanctuary.

Part V — Marble Run

The exhibition reaches a breathtaking pinnacle as visitors ascend to the second floor. Here, the perspective shifts to an omniscient vantage point overlooking the entirety of the imagined city. Marking their second collaboration, Cynthia partners with STICKYLINE—a Hong Kong creative duo celebrated for their large-scale polyhedral sculptures and intricate geometric engineering. Together, they present a monumental, immersive installation that scales a classic childhood toy, the marble run, into a towering architectural marvel reaching nearly three meters in height. From this sweeping, bird’s-eye view, the city unfolds as a colossal metropolis of twisting roads, cascading structures, and labyrinthine pathways, all constructed with the joyful spontaneity of a child at play.

Transcending the boundaries of passive observation, this level serves as a massive, interactive playground. Visitors are invited to physically engage with the installation, releasing marbles into the towering structure to navigate a maze of unexpected routes and dynamic drops. As each sphere careens through the vast city—its journey shaped by gravity, chance encounters, and shifting trajectories—it beautifully mirrors the myriad small, unpredictable decisions that define the human experience. This spectacular interactive finale brings the exhibition to a communal, profoundly joyful close.

“The Architecture of Joy” posits that joy is a deeply fluid, living energy.
