Wilson Shieh “Chop Suey 2008-2022”

I started practising Chinese gongbi ink painting in 1992. The combination of traditional fine-brush technique with contemporary figurative images became my signature artistic style. But from 2008, I expanded my practice with different mediums like pencil and colour pencil drawing, digital print collage, oil and acrylic on canvas. I also developed new themes by incorporating local pop culture into my artwork.

This is my first solo show with JPS Gallery. A display of selected old and new works reflects my exploration alongside my gongbi ink paintings between 2008-2022. The Four Seasons series originated from my gongbi ink painting. I translated the brushwork into colour pencil renderings. My interest in depicting costumes led me to the Paper Doll series, where I re-invented the antique toy with pop and cultural icons. The Mix Tape series shows my addiction to pop music during my teenage years. The Slogan and Text series is an ad-hoc concept that I developed during the annual Fotan studio open days to communicate with a wider audience base.
