Motonori Uwasu draws upon his childhood memories, utilising an abundant pastel palette and intentionally simplistic flat style to portray his liminal world. He chooses suburban sceneries and cars as his subjects, weaving a gentle and serene atmosphere through his deliberately people-less and depth-less landscapes. However, within this tranquillity lies a subtle tension, as the compactness of the compositions disrupts the viewer’s sense of peace. Symbolically, this echoes the artist’s exploration of the distance between memory and reality, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of their own perceptions.
