From Cosmic Ambitions to Personal Revelations
Hong Kong artist Kazy Chan's presentation at Art Central 2025 (Booth A8, JPS Gallery) draws inspiration from NASA's Voyager Golden Record, an extraordinary artefact launched into space as a representation of humanity's message to the cosmos. Designed to surpass the lifespan of human existence and remain intact even in the face of potential global destruction, Kazy realised that he also possessed his own interpretation of a golden record. Unlike NASA's sophisticated technological marvel, his version is a humble collection of childhood messages left behind on a simple, unassuming headboard of his childhood bed, marking the beginning of his creative journey.
A Sticker-Adorned Wooden Headboard
Kazy intends to expand and enrich this golden record by crafting a reimagined version of his childhood headboard at an impressive scale, measuring two meters wide and nearly three meters tall, accompanied by a playful children's bed. Adorned with aged stickers that mirror the artist's childhood habit of chronicling memories and creating stories through stickers, Kazy deliberately transforms the furniture's intended function into a metaphorical symbol that transcends its practical role.
In this installation, Kazy reconstructs the multiple layers of personal history on the wooden surface by recreating the ghostly remnants of stickers that have weathered through the years. While the sticker's vibrant hues have softened and its imagery has grown fainter, the outlines and designs persist, providing glimpses into Kazy's former self. This artistic venture establishes a compelling connection between the artist's past and present, inviting observers to rediscover their own formative experiences and celebrate the lasting imprints of creativity in their lives.
Framing the Past, Painting the Present: The Cabinet’s Second Act
To compliment his exploration of past experiences, Kazy will display a collection of repurposed cabinet doors on the backside of the installation. The tales and narratives previously told through stickers now find new life and begin fresh chapters through his artistic expressions on these salvaged doors. The bold creations on the cabinet doors symbolise the vitality and authenticity of the present, creating a striking contrast against the weathered stickers on the wooden headboard. This interplay forms a poignant metaphor, inviting viewers to engage in an enriching dialogue between the artist's past and present.
Another key element of the cabinet door series is inspired by the artist's collection of Pokémon stickers. Enchanted by the immediate sensory reactions elicited by their unique reflective qualities, he seeks to weave that essence into his new series of artworks, with the intention of capturing the magic of those fleeting moments in a powerful and evocative way.

The Power of Past Imprints
While Kazy's artworks may capture his current state, they will eventually become historical records and undergo natural degradation as he progresses through life and continues adding to his golden record. Every stroke, sticker, and creative decision becomes a message preserved, documenting his presence and artistic evolution.
This installation seeks to elevate personal nostalgia into a broader commentary, prompting viewers to consider how their lasting marks—intentional or unintentional—stand as compelling evidence of our existence and growth journeys. Kazy's role as a temporal chronicler produces an engaging collection of moments, where each artistic decision sustains an ongoing conversation between past and present, artist and viewer, as well as preservation and evolution, leading us to consider: what would be my golden record?
